Bohemian FC kicks off unique community supported agriculture initiative
Bohemian FC has embarked on an exciting journey outside of the football field by establishing the Bohemian Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project.
In April 2023, the members of the Bohemian CSA had their first visit to the farm and have ventured into the realm of sustainable farming and local food production. The CSA project is a brilliant blend of community engagement and environmental responsibility, proving once again that football clubs can play a significant role in promoting sustainable practices and fostering community development.
The Bohemian CSA project revolves around a simple yet impactful model. Members pay a weekly fee of €18 directly to the farm, which in return, provides a box of fresh, seasonal produce every week throughout the farming season, running from June, 2023, to February, 2024.
The beauty of this initiative lies in its flexibility and seasonality. The boxes, will will be collected by members of the CSA at Dalymount Park, where Bohs play their home games, will contain a varying number of items depending on the time of year. During the abundant summer and autumn months, boxes can contain up to 9 items, while during other times, they’ll have a minimum of 4 or 5 items. On average, members can expect about 6 items in their boxes each week.
The club sends out an email every Tuesday detailing the produce that members can anticipate in that week’s box, allowing them to factor the contents into their shopping plans, and preparing them for the delicious, healthy meals they can create. The Bohemian CSA project is more than just a transaction between the club, the farm, and the members. It’s a community-building exercise that strengthens ties between people who share a love for football and a commitment to positive environmental action.
One of the highlights of the project is the monthly farm days. These events invite members, including children, to the farm, offering them a first-hand view of the farming process, the chance to learn more about sustainable agriculture, and a fun-filled day in the countryside. In a unique twist, members can even bring their tents and camp at the farm overnight, bringing a sense of adventure and camaraderie to these monthly gatherings.
Bohemian FC has always been at the forefront of community initiatives, but with the Bohemian CSA project, they’ve taken their commitment to the next level. The project emphasizes the vital role of local farms, promotes healthier diets by providing fresh, seasonal produce, and fosters a deep sense of community among members. Football, at its core, is about community and coming together, and Bohemian FC has taken this ethos to heart. The Bohemian CSA project is a shining example of how football clubs can leverage their influence to improve their communities, promoting sustainability and healthy living in the process.
