FC Twente’s Innovative Approach To Sustainable Water Use in Stadium

Sports stadiums are adopting eco-friendly practices and implement sustainable measures to address environmental challenges. This summer FC Twente has made significant renovations at De Grolsch Veste. These updates are not only aimed at enhancing the fan experience but also focused on minimising water consumption, particularly during the peak summer months.

This summer (2024), FC Twente has implemented several innovative strategies to promote sustainable water use:
● Using Nearby Water Sources: one of the biggest changes is the club’s new water system, which allows them to use water from the nearby Twentekanaal. This canal, next to the stadium, offers a reliable water supply that helps reduce the club’s dependence on mains water. By filtering canal water for irrigation, FC Twente is easing the strain on local water resources, which is important for the community during dry spells.
● Improved Irrigation Systems: in addition to the new water source, FC Twente has upgraded its pitch with a modern drainage and irrigation system that makes better use of water. This system can recycle up to 80% of the water used on the pitch. An underground basin collects excess water, which can be reused for future irrigation.
● Efficient Water Distribution: The installation of an underground spraying mechanism further enhances water conservation efforts. This technology targets the grass roots directly, applying water from beneath the surface during hot periods. Unlike traditional irrigation methods that often lose water to evaporation, this targeted approach ensures maximum absorption by the grass, significantly minimising the waste.

Leading by Example

Through these renovations, FC Twente has not only improved the quality of their playing surface but has also set a powerful example for sustainability in sport. The club’s commitment to reducing its ecological footprint while maintaining a high standard for its athletes demonstrates how innovative practices can lead to more responsible resource management.

FC Twente’s summer renovations at De Grolsch Veste highlight the importance of sustainable water use in sports venues. By using local water sources, improving irrigation efficiency, and reducing overall water consumption, the club is aiming for a greener future in sport.
