SV Werder Bremen to Host Environmental Match Day in 2025
SV Werder Bremen, with guidance from Ecological Sustainability Officer Kristof Fiebing, is planning to launch an annual environmental match day in early 2025 as part of the Football for Climate Justice project. The event will focus on mobility and part of a broader week of climate action aimed at engaging fans and the local community.
The idea comes from Werder Bremen’s history of themed match days addressing social issues, such as racism and inclusion. Kristof described the environmental match day as an “obvious choice” for the club’s next step toward sustainability. The club is planning a range of activities, including a bicycle repair service, which could become a permanent feature at home games. “If it works out, we’d like to have it every match day,” Kristof said.
A key focus for the club is community involvement, with activities designed for all ages, from children to older community members. Werder Bremen is also collaborating with local NGOs and universities to ensure the event meets the needs of its fans and the local population. Kristof explained that “the main target is the fans and the local community”.
Looking ahead, the club is finalizing the date and working to secure more partnerships to enhance the event. Kristof emphasized the importance of involving both club leadership and the community in the planning process, advising other clubs to take a similar top-down and bottom-up approach when addressing climate justice.
