WHAT ROLE CAN FOOTBALL PLAY IN ADVANCING CLIMATE JUSTICE?

The Football for Climate Justice Erasmus+ project, running from 2022 to 2025, led by the European Football for Development Network and involving clubs like Bohemian F.C. and Real Betis Balompié, explores the role football clubs can play in advancing climate action. The initiative aims to move beyond traditional sustainability approaches, emphasizing clubs’ leadership in climate justice through community wealth building. Research reports propose leveraging football’s unique position to support renewable energy, fair employment, and inclusive policies. A fan engagement survey highlights challenges like rising living costs, emphasizing the need for football clubs to address inequalities within their communities and collaborate for inclusive climate action. The project seeks to bring the Football for Climate Justice Framework to life through practical projects over the next 18 months, demonstrating how climate action can enhance community well-being.
